Bald Head Island has been designated an “Important Bird Area” by Audubon due to the incredible diversity of birds that can be found here. Join us on this guided tour as we search for many different species of birds among various island ecosystems. No previous birding experience required.

Learn nature photography tips and tricks and the importance of photography in scientific research and conservation efforts, and how your own photos can play an important part!

Have you ever wondered what creatures come out at night on Bald Head Island? Join us as we explore the island after dark and search for deer, alligators, frogs, and more!

Explore the pristine creeks of BHI on a 2-hour guided tour at high, mid, or low tide. Double kayaks will be used for participants. Kayak trips are rated as moderate to moderately difficult due to sun, tides and wind on the marsh. Conditions may vary depending on the day.
Meet at Village Creek Access on Federal Road.
Children 13 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Trips are tide and weather dependent. Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), paddles, and kayaks will be provided. Please bring a water bottle, sunscreen, bug spray, hat, and clothes that can get muddy and slightly damp. Must sign up at least 1 hour before program start time. Program begins late March.
Head to the beach and prepare to get your hands dirty catching fish & crabs! Family Beach Fishing provides families with a hands-on fishing experience using modern and traditional fishing techniques such as rod & reel, hand-lining, siene nets and cast-netting. No experience necessary.
Anyone over the age of 16 who wishes to participate in program-related fishing activities must possess and have on hand a valid North Carolina Fishing License.
Meet at Access 1. All equipment and bait provided.
Registration ends 30 minutes prior to program start time.
Ride along in our beach vehicle to have the chance to witness a nesting sea turtle or hatching nest – with the option of staying until 2AM if you do not see a sea turtle before midnight. This program is open to all ages. Children seventeen years old and under must be accompanied by a paying adult. Only 2 people/night can participate due to seating restrictions. Meet at the Conservancy circle by 8:45PM. Turtle patrol will leave by 9:00PM to start patrolling.
In the event of inclement weather, especially lightening within 15 miles, we will be off the beach until it clears.
Head to the creek and prepare to get your hands muddy catching fish and crabs. No fishing experience required.

Equipment and bait are provided. This program is for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old. Program begins late March.
Learn hands-on how to catch fish actively at night! Fishing from the surf at night can often be more productive than fishing during the day as more fish come closer to the shoreline to feed and there is less disturbance from swimmers.
Location TBD based on fishing conditions on Bald Head Island. Location will be sent a few hours before the program. All equipment and bait are provided. A parent must accompany any child under 13. Program runs during the summer months.
Meet and interact with some of the Conservancy’s ambassador animals, including turtles and snakes. Learn about our scaly friends and find out how BHIC is working to protect these important reptiles. All participants (children and adults) are required to register.

Come participate in an indoor experience on our campus and discover and learn about the different animals that live on Bald Head Island, where the tide rises and falls every day. Participants will touch and feed coastal critters that live in our saltwater tanks. All participants (children and adults) are required to register.

Understanding the internal and external anatomy of an animal is an important part of conservation science. Join us as we examine and dissect a coastal specimen to learn more about these animals. There will be one dissection kit and specimen per registration.

Campers at the Conservancy will explore, play, and learn during outdoor adventures led by professional education staff. Each day of camp includes nature exploration, crafts, games, live animals, and fun! Themes and activities change daily to keep camp exciting.
Conservancy Camp, Ages 5-9 will be M, T, and W from 9-12pm. (Weekly). Summer Camps are running from May 31st to August 5th.

What do sea turtles eat? Where do they go after they hatch? What is their shell called? In this program you can learn more about our beloved sea turtles that are out in the ocean. Please note that we are not a sea turtle rehabilitation center and we do not have live sea turtles in our collection.
