One of our favorite parts of the summer is finally here—World Sea Turtle Week! Every year, World Sea Turtle Week provides engaging opportunities for us to appreciate the importance of sea turtles, gain awareness of how our sea turtles are being threatened, and learn new ways to protect these magnificent animals.
The festivities began Saturday, June 8, as we kicked off the week with our World Ocean Day cleanup. Sea turtle specimens and activities will be available for you to enjoy all week long in the Fleming Environmental Education Center. Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages (@bhiconservancy) throughout the week to learn some fun facts about sea turtles and keep up-to-date with each day’s on-campus activities!
The Conservancy World Sea Turtle Day celebration takes place Friday, June 14. Come by anytime from 10am–3:00pm to enjoy all kinds of fun sea turtle themed activities. You can take part in our sea turtle virtual reality experience, learn how to be a sea turtle biologist, meet our ambassador box turtles Gloria and Brownie Bite, and so much more!
There are many ways for you to start protecting sea turtles this week and throughout the summer, such as only using red lights on the beach and turning off house lights that face the beach at night. One of the best ways to help nesting sea turtles and sea turtle hatchlings is to leave the beach the way you found it: pick up trash, take everything you brought with you back off the beach, and knock down your sandcastles and fill in holes in the sand before you leave.
Do you enjoy learning about sea turtles, but won’t make it to Sea Turtle Week this year? Sign up for a Conservancy Program! We have sea turtle themed activities and excursions all summer long, including Sea Turtle Ride Alongs, Totally Turtles and, for BHIC members, Turtle Walks! Check out our program calendar to plan ahead at bhic.org/calendar. You can learn more about the conservation work we do for sea turtles on Bald Head Island at bhic.org/conservation/sea-turtle-protection-program/.
This conservation work for protected sea turtles on Bald Head Island is authorized by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission (ES Permit 24ST14).
