Join the BHI Conservancy during the month of October as we “shellebrate” Oyster Month. The Fleming Environmental Education Center will have education exhibits set up for visitors to learn about the ecology, history, culture, and economy of oysters on Bald Head Island!
We would love for you to get involved with our oyster-y events!
Visit the Fleming Environmental Education Center to learn about oysters and make your own oyster crafts!
Learn: Educational activities, digital microscopes, and oyster specimens are on display for the entire month in the Fleming Environmental Education Building! Come make your own oyster craft to take home!
Discover: The salt marsh is a beautiful place to learn more about oysters and how they benefit this ecosystem. A guided kayak tour will take place on Monday, October 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. and will provide fascinating insight into our local oyster population and the essential role they play in maintaining the ecological balance of the salt marsh. During this tour, we’ll visit wild and restored oyster reefs and speak to coastal scientists in the field. Support: You can help support the Conservancy by purchasing oyster-related merchandise at Turtle Central. Come look at our new designs this fall!
Adopt an Oyster: For $10, you can write your name or a short message on a recycled oyster shell, which will be included in a bag to be placed on one of our restored reefs! Donate at https://bhic.org/adopt-an-oyster/ adding your message in the comment box. Or visit TC and write your message in person!
We hope you enjoy shellebrating these mighty molluscs as much as we do! Happy Oyster Month!
