The Bald Head Island Conservancy offers a unique opportunity to witness the wonder of sea turtles nesting or hatching on the island’s beaches. The program provides a beach vehicle ride for participants to search for and observe sea turtles in their natural habitat.
This program is open to all ages, but children under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a paying adult. The conservancy ensures that the safety of the turtles is prioritized by only allowing two people to participate per night due to seating restrictions in the beach vehicle.
Participants are required to meet at the Conservancy circle by 8:45 PM, and the turtle patrol leaves by 9:00 PM to start patrolling. The program is designed to give visitors the best chance to witness the nesting or hatching process of the turtles.
However, in the event of adverse weather conditions such as lightning within a 15-mile radius, the conservancy will take precautions to protect the safety of participants and the turtles. The program will be canceled or postponed until the weather clears up.
Overall, this program is an excellent opportunity for visitors to experience the unique beauty of sea turtles nesting or hatching on Bald Head Island while being mindful of the turtles’ safety and well-being.
Beach patrol ride-alongs occur seasonally from June 1 to August 15. Check back for details.
