Bald Head Island Limited has been a strong supporter of the Bald Head Island Conservancy since our founding in 1983, providing us with substantial financial resources as well as the land for our current campus. The Conservancy was established by Dr. Thad Wester more than 40 years ago in alignment with the Mitchell family’s vision to create a premier island community where people may live in harmony with nature. To further support the Mitchell family vision, Bald Head Island Limited abandoned the previous developer’s plans to build hotels and a second golf course and instead sold a large chunk of the island’s maritime forest to the state of North Carolina at a very discounted rate. This large forest tract, now known as Bald Head Woods, is part of the NC Coastal Reserve system and is the second largest preserved maritime forest tract in North Carolina. We appreciate the continued commitment of Bald Head Island Limited to the Conservancy’s efforts to ensure the island’s environmental systems remain healthy for generations to come.
