The maritime forest is a distinguishing feature of Bald Head Island. It is important to protect this ecosystem so it can continue to thrive. We are involved in multiple forest health programs to help keep the maritime forest vibrant and intact. There is so much to see in the forest. Below are some of our favorite things to do and see in Bald Head Island’s maritime forest.
Trails
The Bald Head Woods Coastal Reserve is managed by the North Carolina Coastal Reserve. There are multiple trails in the Bald Head Woods Coastal Reserve, and we partner with NC Coastal Reserve to maintain these trails.
Live Oak Trees
One of the main features of the maritime forest are the impressive live oak trees. Several of these trees have been dedicated and named. Keep an eye out for the tree markers with the names and information.
Wildlife
The maritime forest is home to many different creatures. Be mindful as you explore, and always keep a safe distance from wildlife. The island as a whole is a great place for birdwatching, and the forest is no exception. Bring your binoculars!
Conservancy Tours
