As you walk through Bald Head Island’s beautiful maritime forest, you are likely looking up, admiring the ancient arches of the live oaks and the flitting of songbirds amongst the treetops. This incredible canopy, however, would not be possible without the humble organisms we can only notice by taking a moment to look down. Fungi rule the forest floor, decomposing fallen logs and plant litter into fertile earth, exchanging necessary nutrients with the plants around them, and fruiting bizarre and beautiful mushrooms in the process. In the nutrient-poor, salty, and windy environment of a barrier island, this relationship between plants and fungi is vital for the forest’s survival. Learning to understand fungi can be a beautiful, and useful, way to appreciate the diverse life on Bald Head Island, so let’s dive into the broader roles fungi play in maritime forest ecosystems, with some examples of fascinating species identified on the island!
You’ve likely seen mushrooms sprouting out of leaf-litter or fallen logs; fungi that feed on dead organic matter are called saprotrophic fungi, and play a vital role in the carbon and nitrogen cycle by recycling essential nutrients back into the soil and reducing the accumulation of dead organic material. Fungi are able to break down this matter through their mycelium, which is a network of thread-like structures that can release enzymes to externally break down tough compounds, then re-absorb them through its cell walls. Some saprotrophic fungi that you might find on the leaf litter in Bald Head Island’s forests are inkcaps (Parasol spp.), stinkhorns (Phallaceae), and certain agarics, like the green-spored parasol (Chlorophyllum molybdites).

Wood-decay fungi are a type of saprotrophic fungi that specifically break down wood; white-rot fungi, for example, are able to break down cellulose and lignin. These are especially tough compounds, and their recycling releases important trapped nutrients. On the surface, many of these fungi form shelf-like mushrooms; on Bald Head Island, some of the most common white rot fungi are turkey tail (Trametes versicolor), chicken of the woods (Laetiporus spp.), and splitgill mushrooms (Schizophyllum commune).

Beneath the soil lies another important type of fungus: those that form mutualistic relationships with plants. These are called mycorrhizal fungi, and they form these mutualisms by connecting their mycelium with plant roots, essentially replacing the role of root hairs in absorbing nutrients. Many fungi have coevolved with their host plant species; neither can exist without the other. Within this relationship, the plant gives the fungus some of the sugars produced during photosynthesis in exchange for nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as an increased uptake of water. This exchange is important in every ecosystem, but is especially vital in the nutrient-poor, sandy soils of a maritime forest, allowing plants like the southern live oak to thrive in harsh conditions. These fungi form a variety of unique, sprouting mushrooms; a few of the mycorrhizal fungi groups on Bald Head Island include boletes (Boletus spp.), amanitas (Amanita spp.), and earthstars (Geastraceae).
