The Bald Head Island Conservancy (Bald Head Island, NC) is accepting applications from graduate students for two new one-year research fellowships in “Barrier Island Science” and “Coastal Sustainability”. Applications are due to Bald Head Island Conservancy by 5 p.m. EST on February 1, 2023.

“The Fellowships provide support for graduate students to pursue research that match priority initiatives for the Conservancy and in collaboration with Conservancy scientific staff,” notes Dr. Chris Shank, Executive Director of Bald Head Island Conservancy. Projects should be appropriate to ecosystems of Bald Head Island and other southeastern US barrier islands. Coastal Sustainability projects will also be conducted in collaboration with the emerging Johnston Center for Coastal Sustainability.

There will be one fellow for 2023 in each category.  Applicants must identify which fellowship they are applying for and follow the instructions specific to that fellowship. Students enrolled in M.S. or Ph.D. programs are eligible.

Each fellowship offers funding of $20,000 for one year. In addition to collaboration with Conservancy staff, it is expected that the Fellow will give a public presentation on the results of the project and provide a 2-page final summary report.

The application process for both fellowships includes a research project proposal, budget, and timeline. Applicants must also submit a CV and letter of support from their advisor and are strongly encouraged to discuss project ideas with BHIC scientific staff prior to applying. More application instructions are included in each fellowship description: Barrier Island Research or Coastal Sustainability.
