Where We Are

Bald Head Island is a forested barrier island which lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the mouth of the Cape Fear River, in southeastern North Carolina.

Middle and Bluff Islands join Bald Head to form what has been historically known as the Smith Island complex. The northern-most subtropical island on the Atlantic seaboard, Bald Head features a significant maritime forest, over 10,000 acres of salt marsh and estuaries, and ten miles of ocean beaches. Access is by private passenger ferry from the mainland at Southport, NC.

Our Facilities

The Conservancy campus is located at the east end of Federal Road on Bald Head Island, adjacent to the point at Cape Fear, East Beach and Bald Head Island's newest community, Cape Fear Station.

Here you will find modern facilities that support our work:

The Education Center: Reminiscent of the one-room schoolhouses of years' past, this is the site of many of our educational programs.

The Dormitory: Houses our summer interns, naturalist and visiting researchers, as well as the Conservancy's Administrative Offices.

The Information Center: Located in the old Cape Fear Light's generator building, it is manned seasonally.

Turtle Central: Our unique and popular gift, book, apparel and toy shop. Open daily year-round, 10AM - 5PM.
