The Following Programs are Available:
Barrier Island Geology What is a barrier island? Do barrier islands move over time? What forces cause this to happen? Students will learn the importance of barrier islands and how they protect the mainland from floods, storms and wind.
Barrier Island Ecosystems Barrier islands are unique islands composed of five basic habitats. This presentation introduces students to each habitat and the animals that have adapted to live there. Habitats include:
- Salt Marsh Habitats
- Maritime Forest Habitats
- Dune Habitats
- Beach Habitats
- Ocean Habitats
Beachcombing Biology From whelk shells to purple sea urchins, this program introduces students to the common critters found on our beaches. Props and displays are used to show students the specimens discussed.
Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation This is a classic program that covers sea turtle history, biology and how we are working to protect sea turtles from extinction. From conservation to research, students will gain greater knowledge about the sea turtles found along our coast. With extra time, we can even play sea turtle jeopardy!
Coastal Birds Adaptation is the key! Our coastal birds have special adaptations that allow them to live in this harsh environment. From brown pelicans to northern gannets, students will learn why these birds make their home in the salt marsh, at the beach, or on the ocean.
