Barrier Island Study Center
Over 85% of the shoreline of the East and Gulf Coasts has barrier islands that protect the mainland from wind and storm damage. The future of barrier islands begins now with enlightened and meaningful discovery of how best to manage systems to assure their resilience to human and natural disturbances. No facility currently exists for barrier island’s system studies, even as the National Science Foundation is staring to make this a priority after Hurricane Katrina.
The Smith Island Complex is unique and breathtaking in its natural diversity. The “green” Barrier Island Study Center will provide greater resources and more sophisticated tools for continuing the Conservancy’s research into preserving and restoring barrier islands. The Center will attract students and scientists from our nation’s best institutions to study barrier island environments.
Please help support sustainable development on barrier islands by contributing to the Project 20/20 Campaign for the Barrier Island Study Center
